I adopted a 12-year old boy in Georgia as a single man. In Georgia, virtually all of the placements are handled by approximately 15 private agencies that are licensed by the state. My agency did a fantastic job! (The also operate in Texas – www.thementornetwork.com . However, I do not know if the Texas branches handle older child adoptions so call them and find out. IF they do, you should use them.). We recently finalized the adoption and the entire process took less than 2 years. I am going to start the process again in January to adopt a second son. I would strongly encourage you to locate a private agency that will work on your behalf to build a family and provide hope and happiness to a child in need. If Texas uses the same process as Georgia you should incur zero out of pocket expenses with a private agency when adopting an older child. BTW, my son is doing remarkably well - good grades at school and many new friends. He recently told me that he “feels normal for the first time in his life”. Good Luck!
