Hi all. I am a 22 year old woman who has worked in a Special Education high school for 3 years. There is one student who I have become very close with over the years. She is 16. She has been a ward of the state, and living in residential homes since birth. She has only recently been moved to foster care. More than ANYTHING IN THE WORLD I would like to invite this girl into my family. I am worried due to my age, they will not take me seriously. I live in a house, all paid for, have a steady job, a college education, and quite possibly a life skills teaching position come September. This student is leaving our program in June, and then legally, per my work's rules, I will be able to attempt to adopt her. I am in a steady relationship and hope to be married in the next 2 to 3 years. I have a large, close, immediate and extended family willing to support me on this. My uncle is one of the board members for a well known world wide adoption agency.
I am wondering if anyone has any advice for me. I understand due to my age I have many obstacles in my path, but I'm willing to fight for this girl. She is a rare gem, so wonderful, even after living without family all her life. I know she would agree to stay with me, should we ask her.
What are my steps?? Where to start??
Thanks. Tess
