I'm hoping to revive this topic for myself, because I've just made the decision to go forward with fostering-to-adopt, just as I may be doing some traveling for trainings myself. I'm looking for older children, so talking things out with them may be an option. But kids in their teens struggle so, one issue after another it seems, that I'm wondering if it would be fair to leave them at all during the initial transition. My inclination would be to take my children with me -- travel time becomes an opportunity to spend extra time together, especially with kids old enough to benefit from the experience. But that wouldn't be allowed in foster care, and with schools set up now to lose money when a child is out of school, they are very strict about missed time. I do have several friends, though, who have also adopted older children, are licensed foster parents, and live nearby. We are a close-knit community and open to keeping each other's kids. I'm hoping this will solve any possible problems, but am wondering if anyone here already has experience with being away from older adopted children.

I nannied for a family who liked to take many vacations away from their adopted little girl. I did not disagree with this until the trips became monthly and sometimes for more than a week at a time. Which brings me to my advice. I noticed many behavioral problems as time went on. The child felt very neglected by her parents and began to act out with very negative behavior both at school and home. So my advice is to take your trip, the child will understand, but do not make the excessive. She felt as if she had to find a way to force her parents to come home early or be home more often. I've spoke with child psychologists about this behavior and tell me that this is normal not only for adopted children but for any child.
